Details: Anna Hawkins’ With Outthrust Arm is a vehicle for the deconstruction of an accepted version of Western art history, and the ways in which the familiar images from within the canon are circulated and disseminated to the broader public. The single-channel video consists of appropriated amateur YouTube footage of the iconic sculpture Laocoon and His Sons. On permanent public display at the Vatican, the sculpture is considered a canonical masterwork within the realm of art history, and became a symbolic ideal to which artists and critics measured artwork into the 20th century. With Outthrust Arm is a loosely organized deconstruction and reorganizing of the iconic image of Laocoon and his two sons. Each image is appropriated from found YouTube clips and then cut, cropped, and reorganized. As the video progresses, the sculpture is continually reorganized, creating new objects, and new meanings of the iconic imagery.
